School Trips and Home-Education sessions

We run school trips and home-ed sessions all year round, all designed to train our visitors in essential skills.

We teach the following skills:

Shelter Building

We're out in all conditions, so our shelters have to be good enough to cook under and sleep under (and we do).

Fire Building

Matchless fire lighting using traditional and modern methods - always a favourite, and hugely rewarding (for more than just tea and marshmallows).

Campfire Cooking

Wilderness training doesn't mean 'roughing it' when you eat as well as we do.

Team Building

Developing teamwork, self confidence and problem solving abilities underpins everything we do at the Bushcamp.

Stealth Games

Taking hide-and-seek and forty-forty to the next level, we teach some great games to take away and play with friends and family.

Woodcraft

Nothing builds confidence more than crafting your own tools and toys, and these great souvenirs of the Bushcamp ensure you'll leave with more than just new skills and great memories.

Water Procurement and Purification

Learn how to find water and make it safe to drink, when miles from the nearest tap.

Wilderness Navigation

You'll learn how to make it back to civilisation in one piece, even if your GPS doesn't.

Campfire Cuisine

Big Hat Bushcamp instructors love fine dining and we know that food always tastes best cooked over a camp fire, so wilderness cooking is a major part of our courses, with such bush delights as these:

  • Freshly made pizza

  • Campfire chili

  • Freshly baked bread

  • Dutch Oven pasta bake

  • Spit roast beef, lamb, pork and chicken

  • Fresh baked hot dog loaves

  • Campfire flapjacks

  • Ember baked potatoes

  • ‘Pie iron’ toasties and sausages

  • MIxed fruit crumble

  • Huevos rancheros (ranchers' eggs)

  • Baked bananas

  • Griddle pancakes

And of course, as many toasted marshmallows and s’mores as you can eat.

Overnight Accommodation

Whilst hammock camping is our preferred way to live in the woods, we recognise that suspended sleeping doesn’t work equally well for everyone or every situation. If the forecast is for particularly cold, wet, or windy weather, you may prefer to rent one of our large bell tents (5m wide x 3m tall). They can comfortably accommodate 9 or 10 kids each and are £150 each for however many nights you’re staying, or £100 if the kids are putting it up themselves (which is part of the fun). If you opt for a tent, ours or one of your own, we strongly recommend bringing a roll mat or air mattress, as well, to put some distance between yourself and the cold hard ground.
